WHAT DOES MEDICARE COVER? Medicare has two parts:
(Part A) Hospital Insurance and (Part B) Medical Insurance.
Part
A has deductibles
and co-insurances but most people do not have to pay for part A of Medicare.
Part A helps pay for four kinds of medically necessary care:
Inpatient Hospital Care
Inpatient Care in a Skilled Nursing Facility After a Hospital Stay
Home Health Care
Hospice Care
Part B has premiums
that you must pay yourself. Like Part A it also has deductibles and a
coinsurance. Medicare Part B helps pay for:
Doctors' Services
Outpatient Hospital Care
Diagnostic Tests
Medical Equipment
Ambulance Services
Many Other Services and Supplies Not Covered by Medicare Part A
Medicare supplement coverage is the exact same no matter
what company you look at due to government standardization. Be it a plan
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, or J there is no difference in coverage between the
companies. However there is a difference in price and service.
TIPS ON
CHOOSING A MEDIGAP POLICY
What you should look for when searching through the many companies
that offer Medigap policies:
1. If you have questions or problems will there be a
representative you can depend on to help you?
2. Is the company or agent more interested in selling you a
policy, or sincerely helping you to choose the best plan?
3. Look at how much the premium will be and compare it to
other companies.
4.
Ask what the company is rated through a rating service such as
A.M. Best.
This will let you see how well off the company is financially. Most agents
should be able to tell you what the company is rated, or you can check the
rating yourself HERE.
Trying to decide on what
plan would be best for you is a little bit harder. It all depends on what
you want, but there are a few things I will point out that may be helpful.
Most people narrow the decision down to plans C, D, E, F, & J. Most
end up deciding on the plan F, but first I will talk a little bit about
the plan J. Plan J is what you would call the Cadillac plan, it offers
everything including a prescription drug benefit. Of course the main
downfall of the plan J is the price, it is over double the premium of a
plan F. The next downfall is the fact that the drug benefit has a cap of
$3,000 per year. When you figure up the extra premium and the fact that
it only pays up to $3,000, more times than not it's not justified. Plan J
also has a preventive care benefit, but like the drug benefit it too has a
cap. The plan J will only pay up to $120 per year for preventive care.
There are only a few companies left in Iowa that still offer the plan J;
out of the companies that we write for Blue Cross is the only one. Also
keep in mind that the premium is going to continue to increase as you get
older.
Next we'll talk a bit about the plan F. Like I mentioned earlier this
is the plan that most people decide on. It is under half of the premium
of the plan J and offers everything the plan J does except the Drug
Benefit, At-Home Recovery, and Preventive Care.
The plans C, D, & E can be a good alternative to the plan F if you are
looking to keep the premium down. The plan C offers everything the plan F
has except for the Medicare Part B Excess Charges (doctors are allowed to
overcharge what Medicare accepts by 15%, the plan F covers this charge
where the plan C does not). The plan D is less expensive than the plan
C. It has the same coverage as the plan C except for the Medicare Part B
$100 deductible. The difference in premium with the plan D may well be
over $100, which may justify taking this plan. The plan D offers coverage
that the plan F and C does not however, which is the At-Home Recovery
benefit. The plan E is another good alternative to the plan F to
reduce your premium. It has the same coverage as the plan D except it
takes away the At-Home Recovery benefit and adds the Preventive Care
benefit.
I hope we were able to help you in making a good decision on the right
plan and the right insurance company, and I hope you will give us a chance
to be your agent.
